WHAT WE DO ON FREE BUDA CASTLE TOUR
This walk explores the historic Buda Castle District, a “city within the city” with cobbled streets, royal residences and some of the best views in Budapest. It is the perfect follow‑up to the city‑center free tour if you want to understand the royal and medieval side of the Hungarian capital.
We meet at Batthyány tér on the Buda riverbank, then gently walk up to the Castle District together at a relaxed pace.
Along the way you will:
- Hear how Buda became the royal quarter of Budapest and why this area is called the “Watertown”.
- Learn about the many sieges, wars and reconstructions that shaped the hill.
- Get a local guide’s perspective on what life is like today in this unique district.
ROUTE & MAIN SIGHTS
From the meeting point at Batthyány tér, we first stop by St Anna Church, where you hear about the 1st District and its role as the royal neighbourhood of Budapest.
Then we make a short 7‑minute climb (about 2 × 40 steps) up to the Castle to reach the famous Fisherman’s Bastion, one of the most beautiful viewpoints in the city.
From there, highlights include:
- Matthias Church – the iconic, richly decorated church in the heart of the district, with stories of kings, coronations and battles.
- Fisherman’s Bastion & Holy Trinity Square – spectacular terraces and statues, plus some small “secrets” of the square that most visitors walk past.
- András Hadik and his mysterious horse – a fun story and a little superstition locals still follow.
- The oldest memorial of the hill – and what it reveals about the changing powers in Buda.
- The story of the military bunker, now Hospital in the Rock – how the hill was used and defended in the 20th century.
- The oldest residential street & Jewish heritage – sometimes called the Jewish District of Buda, with the oldest active synagogue in Hungary and the small Medieval Jewish Prayer House nearby.
- The National Archives – where you hear about the different sieges and how often the Castle had to be rebuilt.
- Tóth Árpád Promenade – peaceful medieval remains and a panoramic, tree‑lined walk with views over the Buda Hills.
- The “real royal part” of the hill – the area around the Royal Palace, the Carmelite Monastery and the headquarters of Hungary’s current leadership, sometimes nicknamed the “Hungarian White House”.
We finish at the Royal Palace, in front of the Hungarian National Gallery, where your guide will help with directions back to Batthyány tér, down to the riverfront, or on to your next stop in the city.
